Learn more about neurofeedback, biofeedback, and cognitive training at Focal Points

ARE NEUROFEEDBACK, COGNITIVE RETRAINING, AND BIOFEEDBACK COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Focal Points is a fee-for-service practice, and our clinicians do not handle insurance claims. However, we urge you to contact your insurance company, which may be able to reimburse you for sessions. Focal Points will provide you with the information your insurance company may require.

HOW MANY SESSIONS OF NEUROFEEDBACK, COGNITIVE TRAINING, OR BIOFEEDBACK ARE NEEDED?

The number of treatment sessions depends on the client’s needs and the nature of his cognitive dysfunction. Neurofeedback treatment often requires at least 20 sessions of varying length, and cognitive training often requires at least 20 hours total of training.

HOW LONG IS EACH NEUROFEEDBACK, COGNITIVE TRAINING, AND BIOFEEDBACK SESSION?

Generally, each neurofeedback, cognitive training, and biofeedback session lasts for one to one-and-a-half hours, depending on the client’s situation.

WHICH TREATMENT IS MORE EFFECTIVE: NEUROFEEDBACK, COGNITIVE TRAINING, OR BIOFEEDBACK?

Typically, the most effective treatment will be determined by the client’s assessment, needs, and goals. In most cases, a combination of therapies is appropriate.

WHAT ROLE DO PARENTS PLAY IN THE NEUROFEEDBACK, COGNITIVE TRAINING, AND BIOFEEDBACK PROCESS?

Parental oversight is essential to the quality of cognitive training completed outside the office. It is important for parents to be educated through the process to reinforce and generalize skills learned.

CAN CLIENTS ACHIEVE PERMANENT RESULTS?

Research has indicated that the benefits gained from neurofeedback, cognitive training, and biofeedback result in long-term potentiation, or long-term improvement. After clients complete their determined protocol and make improvements, our therapists will monitor their progress through follow-up office visits.

CAN CLIENTS TAKE MEDICATION WHILE UNDERGOING NEUROFEEDBACK/COGNITIVE TRAINING/BIOFEEDBACK TREATMENT?

Clients who are treated pharmacologically prior to beginning these treatments remain on their current regimen. When feasible, we complete pre- and post-testing while clients are on and off medication to determine the efficacy of the neurofeedback and cognitive training.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF IN-HOME COGNITIVE TRAINING VS.IN-OFFICE COGNITIVE TRAINING?

Doing cognitive training in the home makes the process more convenient for clients. They can complete the protocol on their own time and in the comfort of their own space. It is equally as important, however, that the therapist closely monitor a client’s progress and modify the protocol as needed to ensure the desired results.

AFTER TREATMENT HAS ENDED, CAN CLIENTS CONTINUE PRACTICING NEUROFEEDBACK OR COGNITIVE TRAINING ON THEIR OWN?

After a client’s treatment has ended, the therapist will provide monitoring and follow up sessions. In addition, clients can return for regular appointments for abbreviated periods of time as needed. If clients wish to continue with cognitive training, we can extend their program license beyond the first year.

IS NEUROFEEDBACK OR COGNITIVE TRAINING OFFERED IN SCHOOLS?

Cognitive training is available in some schools for students receiving special education and related services. Contact your child’s school counselor to see if cognitive training and neurofeedback are available as ADHD treatments.

"My daughter used to come home with at least two Ds on her report card. Now, she is getting all As and Bs, and she's even on the honor roll this semester."
