Becoming a Level One Treatment
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) – a renowned association comprising more than 60,000 pediatric medical professionals – recently elevated biofeedback to a level one treatment, “Best Support” intervention for ADHD.
This represents a paradigm shift in the medical industry and validates what we have said again and again: biofeedback is a highly effective treatment for ADHD.
What does the recommendation of biofeedback as a good treatment for ADHD mean?
The American Academy of Pediatrics has a report on Evidence-Based Child and Adolescent Psychosocial Interventions, which they update every six months based on current research about various treatments. This psychosocial intervention report is passed on to pediatricians so that they can best serve their patients.
A level one “Best Support” intervention means that pediatricians should recommend biofeedback as a primary option for treating ADHD. This is exciting news, as we have personally seen the success of biofeedback, neurofeedback, and cognitive training, and believe that every patient should be aware of these as viable treatments for ADHD.
What is biofeedback?
Biofeedback is a non-pharmacological treatment for learning, mood, anxiety, and executive function disorders. Biofeedback measures and monitors brain activity, displaying this feedback on a computer screen for the patient to see.
When patients understand how their brain works, therapists can teach patients how to modify their mental patterns. For example, by seeing how the brain reacts to the symptoms of ADHD – such as not paying attention to details or becoming easily distracted – the patient can better recognize and control these inefficient behaviors.
Why should I choose biofeedback over medication?
Although medication is also listed as a “Best Support” for ADHD, there are many children and families for which medicine is not the ideal long-term solution. For these people, biofeedback, neurofeedback, and cognitive training are the better solutions, because – as patients understand how to control their behaviors – they develop the means to continually reduce the symptoms of their mental disorders without the side effects of medication.
For this reason, and many others, we highly advise biofeedback, neurofeedback, and cognitive training over medication.
